Blindfolded Driver Crashes While Participating in 'Bird Box' Challenge

bird box challenge blamed for driver who crashed into another vehicle while blindfolded

Police in Utah say a teenager who was participating in the latest viral 'challenge' is to blame for a crash that left two vehicles all banged up.

Layton police tweeted two photos of the crash which they said occurred on Monday.

"Bird Box Challenge while driving… predictable result," the department wrote on Twitter. "This happened on Monday as a result of the driver covering her eyes while driving on Layton Parkway."

The 17-year-old girl was driving on Layton Parkway Monday when she reportedly decided to pull her beanie hat over her eyes and keep driving, according to Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman.

The teen eventually lost control, swerving into oncoming traffic where she sideswiped another vehicle on the driver's side. The girl's pickup then spun into a light pole and concrete barrier along the parkway.

The "Bird Box Challenge" was spawned by the popular Netflix movie "Bird Box." The movie's characters must remain blindfolded at all times, with Sandra Bullock's character needing to do several everyday activities while blindfolded.

It's similar to other viral challenges such as the dangerous "In My Feelings" car challenge and Tide Pod eating Challenge that went viral last year.

This isn't the first time people have gotten hurt in the "Bird Box Challenge."  The Netflix social media team has attempted to discourage viewers from participating in the viral meme, with limited results.

"Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE," the official Netflix account tweeted earlier this month. "We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."

No injuries were reported as part of the crash. Police say they expect to hand the case over to prosecutors for a possible charge of reckless driving.
