Democrat Doug Jones Wins Alabama Senate Race

Democratic candidate Doug Jones has been elected to Alabama's open U.S. Senate Seat. The special election was held after President Trump appointed Jeff Sessions to Attorney General. Jones will be the first Democrat to serve as an Alabama Senator since Howell Heflin lost the seat to Sessions in 1997.

The race was incredibly close, reflecting the controversial nature of the campaign. Jones won the night by only a few thousand votes, beating Moore in a race that had become incredibly polarized and watched by people all over the country.

However, during a speech tonight after several networks called the election for Jones, Moore refused to concede, telling his supporters "When the vote is this close, it's not over."

Jones faced huge odds against Republican Roy Moore, whose campaign stumbled in recent weeks after The Washington Post published a story about Moore's alleged sexual misconduct with underage women. Jones initially started more than 20 points behind Moore in a state where Republicans have traditionally dominated politics.

Jones will complete Sessions' Senate term which is up in 2020. He'll have to run again in four years if he wants to keep the seat.
